Potato Lake
Some names have unexpected meanings...
They call it Potato Lake.
A silly, amusing name for such a still, serene, peaceful place.
Some say it’s because of its shape. And sure, if you look at it from above, it has a sort of oblong perimeter one could say is reminiscent of a potato.
But that’s not the real reason.
Others say the lake got its name because they used to grow potatoes in the fields nearby. And the use of the neighboring land, historically, could certainly support that theory.
But that’s not the real reason.
I know the truth.
It’s because death lurks in the darkest depths and we call it Potato Lake because its eyes are always watching.
And, in case you want to know how I know, it’s because I was lured here long ago and have haunted the shores ever since, warning people like you to stay away.
So, run and tell everyone the truth about the name.
Potato Lake isn’t silly or amusing.
It’s patient Death.
Waiting.
Still.

This is superb! Love the way this unfurls <3
I love the connection to the eyes! And there is a tension that seems to build throughout that really makes the ending feel more potent. This is great!
